Closing of the Hips

This sacred postpartum ritual, known in Mexico as La Cerrada, is a traditional ceremony offered to “close” the body, mind, and spirit after birth. Across many cultures—from Mexico and Ecuador to Morocco and India—it is believed that during birth, a mother’s energy and soul expand outward to bring life into the world. The Cerrada lovingly calls the mother’s spirit back home, supporting her body as it integrates the profound experience of pregnancy and birth.

The ceremony includes an Herbal postpartum bath or yoni steam, hot oil massage, manteada (mayan massage with rebozos), closing with rebozos where the mother is wrapped and cocooned in rebozos, creating a profound sense of containment, rest, and renewal. Mothers often describe the experience as being embraced in a loving, sacred hug, leaving them feeling grounded, re-centered, and deeply nurtured.

Traditionally, this ritual is most beneficial after the 40-day postpartum period known as la cuarentena, when the body has completed its initial recovery phase and is ready for deeper integration and closure. It is a ritual of closure, renewal, and returning to yourself.

"I had the closing of the bones ceremony after my last babies birth. It was so transforming for me. It opened up a peace to this new path and a gentle nod to the old. Laura came to my home and transformed it to a scared space. My close friends present and participated creating a beautiful day. The ceremony started with an intention and a bath. The closing of the bones with the wraps was unlike anything I have ever experienced, so ancient like I was connecting to the past way. I was so glad I did this and was surrounded by my close friends and family. We all cried. It was a great way to honor this new step in my motherhood journey! Thank you Laura!!"
