What Mothers Say about Nurturing Postpartum Care

I had the closing of the hips ceremony done as well as a yoni steam and abdominal massage and wow! What a way to welcome a new mom into motherhood. It was so empowering. Every woman deserves this whether it’s after labor or a shift in their life! Once the ceremony is over you feel the biggest weight lifted off your shoulders and your body feels so much lighter. Overall it’s an extremely peaceful and beautiful experience and I definitely recommend it to every woman!

Laura is truly amazing. As a first time mom with family on the other side of the country, she was an integral part of my postpartum healing and support system; I don’t know what I would have done without her to be honest! Postpartum care is so so important and rarely talked about in the pregnancy time; I did not anticipate feeling so lost when I got home with baby. Laura helped heal my body with abdominal massage, yoni steams, and abdominal binding, cooked nutritious meals and teas and provided never ending guidance, support and care for my newborn and I. From baby wearing, to breastfeeding support, sleep schedules and soothing techniques, she truly is a wealth of knowledge and I’ve learned so much. Her compassionate spirit and unyielding patience was such a welcome presence in the first weeks of being home with baby and still is to this day! Laura performed the closing of the hips ceremony with the postpartum bath for my second postpartum period. The ceremony is an absolute must for marking the importance of the postpartum period and honoring the mom during a time that can feel very overwhelming and also forgotten. It brought so much to the surface and helped to remember all that my body, mind and spirit had gone through throughout pregnancy, birth and the immediate postpartum. Processing these times is so important for the mom in integrating her story and welcoming her newest identity shift. There’s so much thought and nourishment that goes into this ceremony and I can’t recommend it and Laura enough. Thank you so much!

Laura did a fantastic job of coming into our home and seamlessly integrating herself. Her calm, easy going demeanor made us all feel comfortable, and her expert knowledge about newborns and older children alike was extremely helpful. My baby was very fussy, and since my first son had not been this way, it was new and uncertain territory for me. She guided me in looking for my newborns cues, coached me on calming and soothing him, and helped me get some rest so I could be a better parent to both kids.

Laura made a huge difference in catching a tongue tie that had been supposedly fixed. We had it clipped at birth, but the Dr had missed a large part of the tissue and while it was better, he was still struggling to latch properly. We had overlooked any tongue issues because we had thought it was taken care of. Laura’s acute observation led us right back to the Dr, where he agreed there was still too much tying his tongue down and did the procedure over again. I was so thankful! Without her, I don’t think we would have realized the issue.

Laura provided expert care and took the time to teach us how to manage such a fussy/sensitive baby. She also helped with all the other first-time parent challenges: breast/bottle feeding, burping, swaddling, soothing, and moby/ergo wrapping. In all, her confident, positive and hopeful attitude not only benefited the baby, but also gave us the boost we needed to keep going under such challenging circumstances. By the way, nearly everything she diagnosed about the baby’s health/condition was correct; almost all of her predictions about when the baby would turn the corner and grow out of her “belly-aching” were also accurate. We’d have been lost without her.

If you are considering working with Laura, take my word for it that it will be the best decision you could have made for yourself during your precious postpartum. She has within her such a delicate balance of having all the knowledge and expertise but making it digestible with no judgement. We did massage, muxabustion, caster oil packs, postpartum herb baths, yoni steams, she brought me protein balls and teas, tonics, the lists of things we did goes on. She is a true rare bird and I miss our sessions immensely.

After being discharged, Laura helped show me different breastfeeding positions and educated me on common questions, such as the duration of breastfeeding, cues for hunger, and certain techniques for milk production. One of the twins was in the NICU for 3 weeks, which gave me time to focus on his brother. After a few attempts, and numerous consults via text messaging with Laura, I managed to breastfeed one of my newborns with ease. When she came over, she explained to me what to look for in a proper latch. The process took numerous attempts and coaching on her part. Our other baby, who was in the NICU, was bottle fed due to his low birth weight. Once he was discharged, I asked her to assist me during the transition from bottle to breast. I found this extremely challenging because he would get frustrated when I would try to latch him on. My biggest concern was nipple confusion. I was starting to think my opportunity to breastfeed both babies had passed. Laura refused to give up on me and made sure I stuck with it. She was very supportive and encouraging. As a mother of twins, I found that to be so important and helpful! Her professionalism and charismatic personality helped put my mind at ease and made me feel comfortable with the whole nursing process.

I am so grateful for Laura and all her knowledge. After having baby #2 I figured I knew everything there was to know raising my baby. I was completely wrong and felt so lost. My baby was having trouble putting on weight even though I felt I was doing everything right. I felt like the hospitals lactation consultants weren’t being supportive enough and made me feel guilty for not doing certain things I didn’t feel comfortable with. I was completely stressed and scared that I was doing something wrong. I was referred to Laura though a family member who had spoken so highly of her. My first conversation with her I felt her warmth and comfort just though our phone call. Laura helped me so much with breastfeeding and gave me amazing tips. She shared  the benefits of baby wearing with me and help me understand baby’s sleep habits. She helped me gain confidence in acknowledging that I was doing my best and that I should never feel guilty for following my instincts. She assured me that what I was doing was all my baby needed. Sure enough my baby was gaining weight and I had felt a huge sigh of relief because of her.  She not only gave me so much guidance she was supportive, uplifting and nurturing. One of my favorites things about Laura was her beliefs on how women deserve so much more during postpartum and those crucial early days at home with baby.

She is absolutely amazing and look forward to reaching out to her again in the future

I had the closing of the bones ceremony after my last babies birth. It was so transforming for me. It opened up a peace to this new path and a gentle nod to the old. Laura came to my home and transformed it to a scared space. My close friends present and participated creating a beautiful day. The ceremony started with an intention and a bath. The closing of the bones with the wraps was unlike anything I have ever experienced, so ancient like I was connecting to the past way. I was so glad I did this and was surrounded by my close friends and family. We all cried. It was a great way to honor this new step in my motherhood journey! Thank you Laura!

Working with Laura was the best decision we made for our postpartum experience! Having her support with infant care and breastfeeding was invaluable as first time parents. I deeply benefitted from all the healing therapies, emotional support, and the closing ceremony. I had such a beautiful, empowering, and healing postpartum and I attribute a huge part of that to having Laura on our care team.
Laura Demercurio was our doula for both my children.. She was incredibly supportive as I struggled with postpartum depression with my first child. I would count down the seconds until she arrived. As a first time mom, I knew nothing about babies, and Laura taught me everything—from how to burp the baby to how to figure out a pumping schedule. I told my husband that if I were to have a second child, I absolutely needed Laura to help me out again. When I became pregnant with my son, I discovered that I’d lost her contact information and was distraught. By some miracle, I located her again and I can’t describe the relief I felt, knowing she would be there to help me out. I have worked with several other doulas and night nurses. One almost burned our house down. Another was extremely pushy and bossy. Laura was respectful, sensitive, calming, reliable, and supportive. She offered suggestions without being overbearing, and she was a wonderful presence to have around. I give her my highest recommendation!
